Is it safe to buy hair care and hair tools on Amazon? Who sells each brand
Yes, when the seller is Amazon.com or the brand's own store. One listing can carry offers from Amazon.com, from the brand's store and from resellers, and the buy box, the offer Add to Cart buys, goes to one of them. Of the 137 hair brands we track on Amazon US, 86 are sold by Amazon.com itself and 51 by the brand's own store (some alongside Amazon.com).

Check the batch code
Most hair care and hair tools carries a batch code, a short run of letters and digits printed or embossed on the bottom of the box and on the product itself, and it encodes when the product was made. We don't decode it ourselves, because brands don't publish their formats. checkfresh.com does, brand by brand:
Aesop · ALFAPARF MILANO · Alterna · Aveda · Aveeno · Bain de Terre · Batiste · Biolage · BioSilk · Bumble and bumble · Caudalie · CHI · Christophe Robin · Clairol Professional · Color Wow · COSRX · Davines · Denman · Dove · Drunk Elephant · ELEVEN AUSTRALIA · Garnier · Goldwell · Grande Cosmetics · Herbal Essences · Joico · Kenra · Kérastase · Kiehl's · Klorane · L'Occitane · L'Oréal Paris · LAKMÉ · Lazartigue · Living Proof · Maria Nila · Matrix · milk_shake · Mise En Scène · Mizani · Moroccanoil · Nioxin · OGX · OLAPLEX · Olivia Garden · Oribe · Paul Mitchell · philosophy · Pureology · Redken · René Furterer · RevitaLash · Revlon · Robert Piguet · Sol de Janeiro · The Body Shop
How to check a listing yourself
- Browsing from outside the US, set a US delivery address first; any ZIP will do, 10001 works. Without one Amazon fills the buy box with import and reseller offers. That is how Charlotte Tilbury, Dyson and Clinique once looked unstocked to us, when Amazon.com sold all three.
- Read the two lines beside Add to Cart, “Ships from” and “Sold by”. Amazon.com, or a store in the brand's own name, is the brand's stock; any other name is a reseller's.
- If another name is there, open “Other sellers on Amazon”. Amazon.com or the brand sometimes sells the same listing one row down.
Every link on this site goes to an offer from Amazon.com, Woot (an Amazon company), the brand's own store or Pattern, which sells for brands under contract. A listing whose buy box moves to anyone else loses its link at the next check, and gets it back when the seller changes back.
Questions
Is it safe to buy hair care and hair tools on Amazon?
Yes, when the seller is Amazon.com or the brand's own store. Of the 137 hair brands we track on Amazon US, 86 are sold by Amazon.com itself and 51 by the brand's own store (some alongside Amazon.com).
Does Amazon sell fake hair care and hair tools?
When Amazon.com is the seller, the order comes out of Amazon's own stock, and a store in the brand's name is the brand. Any other name in the buy box is a reseller: what they ship can be genuine, grey-market, old or fake, and the listing doesn't say which.
How do I tell if hair care and hair tools from Amazon is real?
Check the seller first: the "Sold by" line beside Add to Cart should read Amazon.com or a store in the brand's name. Then check the batch code printed on the box and on the product itself; a decoder such as checkfresh.com turns it into a production date for 56 of the 137 brands here.
