How a dupe gets on HerDupes

232 pairs so far, and 83 candidates turned down with the reason on file. A cheaper product is listed as a dupe only when it clears four checks.

1. Amazon.com or the brand sells it

The dupe has to be sold new by Amazon.com, by Woot (an Amazon company), by the brand's own Amazon store, or by Pattern, which sells for brands as their authorized partner. The seller is read from Amazon at every price check, every 8 hours, and by hand with a US delivery address set: without one, Amazon shows import and reseller offers instead.

When only third parties sell a listing, its link comes off the page and its photo stays. Today 694 of the 758 products here link to Amazon, and 46 luxury originals are shown without a link because only resellers carry them. Who sells each brand on Amazon

2. It costs at least 40% less per ounce

On the day a pair is written, the dupe has to cost at least 40% less per ounce than the original. The shelf price isn't the test: e.l.f.'s cleansing balm was 64% cheaper than Clinique's on the shelf and 22% cheaper per ounce, because the jar holds less than half as much, so it came off the site.

Grams and milliliters are compared at 1 g to 1 ml, which holds for creams, balms and glosses. Tools have no ounces and are compared on price. Prices are Amazon's own, printed with the time they were read, so the percentage on a page moves with them. Across the 221 pairs with a size on both sides, the median dupe costs 75% less per ounce today. The Dupe Index

3. It matches on what does the work

4. We can say what it does worse

Every comparison is written in three parts: what matches, what the dupe does worse, and the price. If we can't name what the cheaper product gives up, we haven't understood the pair, and it doesn't go up. A luxury product is never listed as the dupe of another luxury product, and nothing here carries a “percent match” score: one number can't say whether two products share an active or only a color.

One pair through the four checks

Matrix Food For Soft Hydrating Shampoo against L'Oréal Paris Elvive Hyaluron Plump Shampoo.

  1. Seller: the L'Oréal Paris bottle is sold by Amazon.com.
  2. Price: $1.42 / fl oz against $0.44 / fl oz, 69% less per ounce.
  3. Match: The first 17 ingredients are the same, in the same order. 27 of the dupe's 28 ingredients are in the original. Both are made by L'Oréal. Both lists
  4. What it does worse: Matrix adds avocado oil and a little menthol, which L'Oréal leaves out.

What we turned down

83 candidates have a reason on file, grouped here by the check they failed. Each line is what we found on the date given. Prices and sellers move, so a product turned down for one of them can come back.

Not sold by Amazon.com or its brand (32)

Amazon.com or the dupe's own brand has to sell it. A listing only third parties sell is not one we send anyone to.

Different formula (19)

The two have to share what does the work: the actives, the base, the finish. Products that are only called dupes of each other don't.

Couldn't be checked (10)

We have to be able to read both ingredient lists, both sizes and the seller. A pair we can't check is a pair we can't stand behind.

Only in a set or multipack (2)

The dupe has to be sold as one item. A three-pack that costs more than the original is not a saving.
