The luxury original: Clinique High Impact Mascara Volume and Length, $27

What matches: Both are washable, water-based mascaras built the same way: stearic acid turned into an emulsifier by a neutralizer (aminomethyl propanediol in Clinique, triethanolamine in COVERGIRL), glyceryl stearate and carnauba wax for body, an acrylates copolymer that films over the lash, and panthenol.

What it does worse: Clinique thickens with polyisobutene, silica and VP/eicosene and adds sodium hyaluronate; COVERGIRL uses disteardimonium hectorite and synthetic wax, has a bigger brush, and is preserved with parabens, which Clinique leaves out.
