   What it does worse: COVERGIRL's wears a touch thicker and adds castor and sunflower oils and a food scent for each shade, where Dior uses cherry oil and its own fragrance, and its shades are sheer washes rather than Dior's color-reviving tints.

   Both are washable, water-based mascaras built the same way: stearic acid turned into an emulsifier by a neutralizer (aminomethyl propanediol in Clinique, triethanolamine in COVERGIRL), glyceryl stearate and carnauba wax for body, an acrylates copolymer that films over the lash, and panthenol.

   What it does worse: Clinique thickens with polyisobutene, silica and VP/eicosene and adds sodium hyaluronate; COVERGIRL uses disteardimonium hectorite and synthetic wax, has a bigger brush, and is preserved with parabens, which Clinique leaves out.
